New formatting buttons

9 July 2015

In your admin console you may have noticed some new buttons recently appearing under large text boxes (as shown here).

They read Remove Ragged Edges and Insert Blank Lines, though that wording could change. There is also an Undo button which will appear as required.

Their purpose is to address two common problems affecting text content pasted from other sources:

Remove Ragged Edges

If the text you have pasted contains a hard line break ¶
at the end of each line then it won't extend all the way ¶
across the page, and won't wrap properly. This paragraph ¶
is an example.

Clicking this button will remove the hard line breaks within the paragraph restoring it to a single line.

Insert Blank Lines

Similarly, when copying and pasting from a Word document you will often find that the paragraphs have no spacing between them. That is because the CMS only recognises a double line break as the start/end of a paragraph.¶
Clicking this button will convert all single line breaks into double breaks.

Changing only some text

In some cases only some of the text will have problems. If you first highlight the affected paragraphs then the buttons will apply only within the selection.

Compatibility

This new functionality has been tested in Internet Explorer 9 and higher and should work in all other browsers. Any feedback you have will be appreciated.
